Open Mold
Equipment to apply fiberglass and catalyzed resin to a mold
Two step Process – All parts are built from the inside out in a mold then pulled from the mold yielding a finished part. Open Mold is most common FRP process.
Step One – Gel Coat
Gel Coat must be applied to the mold. Gel Coat is a special form of polyester resin. Can be color pigmented or post process painted. This is the surface finish of the product.
Step Two - Laminate
Gel Coat is a thin and structurally weak process. The part must be laminated with fiberglass and polyester resin to provide structural strength. Fiberglass can be hand layed or chopped.
